Turquoise is the birthstone for December and has been used in jewelry for centuries mainly for it's talismanic atributes. The culture first recognized for its use of the turquoise stone, as well as many other gemstones, used for amulets and talismen is that of the Egypthians. Turquoise amulets were usually worn to gaurd the wearer from harm, specifically from falling and thought to have  origionally been used for a horse amulet to protect horses from the ill effects of drinking cold water after being over heated from extreme exertion. The turquoise stone was attached to the bridles and frontlets of the horse and also thought to protect the rider as well as the horse from falls and broken bones.

Turquoise and sterling silver started to become popluar as jewelry in the late 1800's as the Native American Indians discovered that silver coins were mallable and made wonderful settings for the this talismanic beauty.

The Painted Horse Jewelry and Gifts offers a varied selection of  quality 92.5% sterling silver jewelry with authentic turquoise stones (unless otherwise noted) . Your jewelry with turquoise stones needs to be stored separately from harder gemstone jewelry. The harder stone can mar and scratch the softer turquoise stone.

Be sure to apply perfumes and cosmetics before donning your jewelry as the turquoise stone can become discolored by harsh chemicals found in cosmetics and perfumes. Be sure to remove your jewelry before coming in contact with household cleaners or insecticides.

When not wearing your turquoise and sterling silver jewelry, store in an airtight container, such as a good quality, resealable plastic bag. Use only a soft brush and plain water to clean the stone. You may use a polishing cloth on the sterling silver but avoid contact with the stone.
